General Information

Mokpo is located by the mouth of the Yeongsangang River in the southwestern part of Jeollanam-do. The eastern and southern regions face Yeongsanho Lake and Yeongam-gun. The western part sits adjacent to Shinan-gun made up of various island areas and the northern part neighbors Muan-gun.

Mokpo, lying at the southern part of the Muan Peninsula, is surrounded by Ibamsan Mountain (121m) in the east, Yudalsan Mountain (228m) in the west, and Yangeulsan Hill (156m), Daebaksan Hill (156m), and Jijeokbong Peak (189m) in the north. The south faces the mouth of the Yeongsangang River. The surrounding 13 islands boast a picturesque scenery and play a role of a natural breakwater, thus innately being a good harbor.

To the southwest of the city are Yudalsan Mountain where strange rocks and cliffs surround it like a wall, and Nojeokbong Peak which was disguised as a pile of military provisions during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Along with the Yeongsangang River and Samhakdo Island, they form beautiful views that arouse the poetic inspiration of people. The tideland by the mouth of the Yeongsangang River is used for farmland, residential area, and factory site. There are also six inhabited islands and five uninhabited islands.
